Inland Landscapes


·         Mountain Landscapes consist of mountains and valleys. Valleys are areas of flat land between mountains.


              Mountains have three parts:


-          Foot: The lowest part


-          Summit: The highest part


-          Slopes: The sides between the summit and the foot.

·         Flat landscapes consists of:

-          Plains:  large areas of flat land


-          Moors: High areas of flat land with little vegetation.


-          Hills:  Small rise areas.


-          Flood plains: Fertile land next to a river.





Coastal landscapes




Coastal landscapes are areas of land near the sea. The land can be high or low.
-          Coastal plains are areas of low land on the coast. There are beaches with sand or rocks.

-          Cliffs are areas of high land near the sea. They are high and rocky.

Coastal landscapes have many different characteristics:


-         Gulf: Large area of sea that bites into the land.
-         Bay: A small gulf.
-         Cape: Large piece of land that sticks out into the sea.
-         Peninsula: Piece of land surrounded by the sea on 3 sides. An isthmus is the piece of land that connects it to mainland.
-         Island. An area completely surrounded by water.
-         Archipielago. A group of islands.

Lakes, Reservoirs and Rivers
A lake is a large area of fresh water surrounded by land. Ponds are small lakes. They are form naturally.


A reservoir are man-made lakes for storing river water.


A river is a large flowing body of water. They flow into other rivers or into the sea. Rivers begin in high areas such as mountains.

-          A tributary is a river that flows into a larger river.
-    The flow is the volume of water in a river.



A river makes a long journey from the mountains to the sea.


-          Source: It´s where the river begins.
-          Mouth: It´s where the river ends at the sea.
-          Course: It´s the journey from the source to the mouth.


The course of a river has 3 parts:
-          Upper Course. It´s near the source. The river is narrow and has a little water. It-s very fast.
-          Middle course: The river flows though plains. It has more water and it´s more slowly.
-          Lower course: Near the mouth of the river. The river is wide and the water flows very slowly.
